MediaMassage

McLuhan compiled together with the designer and illustrator Quentin Fiore the book "The Medium is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects". In collages and illustrations they comment and visualize ideas about media´s role in our culture. The illustration "Art is anything you-can get away with" are from that book.

The Medium is the Message”...

Why name a project MediaMassage and why open up Marshall McLuhan from the library?

Because
...art does not exist in a vacuum, art is an integreated part of our connected, digital world...
...media links us together and is an increasingly important tool for communicating...
...the statement "The Medium is the Message" are wellknown for artists all over the world...
...this year it is 100 years since the birth of Canadian sociologist and media researcher McLuhan...

Citations from "Understanding media" by Marshall McLuhan published 1964.
The book discuss and analyze how technology, media relates to the creation of art. Amazingly relevant and interesting to reflect on in our electronically, connected times. Some of his conclusions are original and technology-hostile, dystopian, while others are more self-evident and connects our communicative abilities and needs.

In the chapter ”Hybrid Energy” McLuhan writes - ”...media as extensions of our senses intitute new ratios, not only among our private senses, but among themselves. Radio changed the form of the news story as much as it altered the film image in the talkies. TV caused dramatic changes in radio programming and in the documentary novel...It is the poets and painters who react instantly to a new medium like radio or TV.”

McLuhan summarize the chapter with the lines - ”The hybrid of the meeting of two media is a moment of truth and revelation from which new form is born...The moment of the meeting of media is a moment of freedom and release from the ordinary trance and numbness imposed by them on our senses.”

In the following chapter, "The Nemesis of creativity", McLuhan reflects on how technology both acts as a tool for spreading knowledge and insight and contributes to passivity and fragmentation. He finds the antidote to this in modern culture - ”Just as higher education is no longer a frill or luxury but a stark need of production and operational design in the elctric age, the artists is indispensable in the shaping and analysis of the life of forms and structures created by electric technology.”

To underline this McLuhan quotes the writer and artist Wyndham Lewis who writes ”The artist is always engaged in writing a detailed history of the future because he is the only person aware of the nature of the present”.

At the same time as McLuhan celebrates the positive possibilities of media, he delivers harsh critic of the media content – (consider the fact that this i written in the early ages of television and advertising) - ”Leasing our eyes and ears and nerves to commercial interests is like handing over the common speach to a private corporation, or like giving the earth´s atmosphere to a company as monopoly.”

In the preface to the 1994 edition of ”Understanding Media” Lewis H. Lapham underlines the close relations between media and art as he wrtites - ”...McLuhan understood how the habits of mind derived from our use of the mass media - ”we become what we behold....we sjape our tools and afterwards our tools shape us.”
